Is it cold where you are? Has winter hit? Here in Utah where I am, the temperatures say “winter,” although we don’t have a blanket of snow yet. (Don’t get me wrong; it has snowed a few times, but it’s not sticking around yet.)
Cold weather makes me think of sunshine and beaches! How about you? Are you dreaming of your next getaway, but can’t decide between a cruise or an all-inclusive resort? You may have been on one but are wondering about the other. Well, both are excellent choices! They offer convenience, fun, and great value, but each has its own unique vibe. Let’s break it down so you can decide which fits your travel style best.
Both cruises & all-inclusives:
Both cruises and all-inclusive resorts cater to travelers seeking stress-free vacations. They’re prepaid packages loaded with activities, dining options, and opportunities to socialize. Here's what you can expect:
Activities: Cruises have onboard entertainment, pools, fitness classes, and ports to stop at which offer shore excursions. Resorts have water sports, fitness classes, live shows, and themed events, plus options for offsite excursions.
Dining: Both options spoil you with multiple included dining venues, from casual eats to fine dining.
Social: Whether it’s mingling on deck or bonding over drinks at the resort bar, both settings encourage making new friends.
Cruising Pros & Cons
If you’re all about variety, a cruise might be your ticket to adventure.
Pros:
Multiple Destinations: A cruise lets you wake up in a new location every day—perfect for travelers with a “why choose one when you can have them all?” mindset.
All-in-One Travel: You can explore multiple destinations without the hassle of repacking. Plus, cruises can change routes to dodge bad weather (tropical storms or hurricanes), keeping your trip smooth.
Dining Extravaganza: Many cruises offer a wide range of dining options, from casual buffets to gourmet experiences.
Cons:
Smaller Accommodations: Cabins are cozy, but space is limited compared to a resort suite.
Additional Costs: While base prices can be affordable, extras can add up. Some of the restaurants are included, but definitely not all. Drink packages aren’t inexpensive, and excursions aren’t included in your cruise price. And don’t forget the gratuities, which are added on automatically if you don’t prepay them.
Structured Itineraries: Cruises run on a tight schedule, which some spontaneous travelers don’t love. If you’re not back onboard by a certain time, you’ll get left!
Seasickness: If you’re prone to motion sickness, a cruise may not be your top choice. But on the bright side, there is some good medication out there!
All-inclusive resort pros & cons
If your idea of a perfect vacation is a nice stretch of relaxation, an all-inclusive resort might be your best bet.
Pros:
Spacious Comfort: From standard rooms to luxurious suites, you’ll have plenty of space to relax.
No schedules! Whether you want to laze by the pool all day or explore at your own pace, the choice is yours.
All-Inclusive Value: Meals, drinks, Wi-Fi, and many activities are included, making it easier to stick to your budget. Off-site excursions are additional, but the majority of things at the resort are included.
Cons:
One Destination: You won’t get the variety a cruise offers.
Possible higher upfront cost: Resorts may seem pricier at first, although adding in the gratuities, dining, beverage and WiFi packages will quickly add up.
Cost Comparison: cruises vs. all-inclusives
Factor | Cruise | All-Inclusive Resort |
Base Price: | Generally cheaper | Often more expensive |
Extras: | Drinks, dining, excursions | Most included upfront |
Overall Spend: | Can climb quickly | More predictable |
The bottom line: cruises vs. all-inclusive resorts
