Should you print your boarding pass before you fly?

And other pre-flight tips

Traveling is fun, no doubt about it! But getting to your destination, especially if there are flights involved, can be stressful. Will your flights be on time? How long will it take you to get through security? Will there be a screaming child on your flight? Well, I can’t answer everything, but I can answer some pre-flight questions. To help ensure your journey is as smooth as possible, read on:

Should you print your boarding pass?

While digital convenience is super great, printing your boarding pass can save you from potential hassles. Mobile boarding passes are convenient but can be problematic if your phone battery dies or there are connectivity issues at the airport. A printed boarding pass is a reliable backup that ensures you're always prepared. If you don’t print it at home, definitely have the check-in agent print you a boarding pass.

How early should you check in online?

Take advantage of early online check-in, typically available 24 hours before departure. This not only saves time but also offers the opportunity to select your preferred seat (if you haven’t already selected it), and avoid lengthy lines at the airport. Setting a reminder on your phone can help you make the most of this feature. For some airlines, like Southwest, the time you check in for your flight determines your boarding time.

When should you arrive at the airport?

Arriving at the airport with ample time to spare is crucial. Aim to get there at least two hours prior to domestic flights and three hours ahead for international flights. This allows time for check-in, security screenings, and reaching your gate without undue stress. In my home airport (Salt Lake City), the Delta terminal is close, but some of the other airlines have about a 20 to 30-minute walk—and that’s AFTER you get through security.

Although I don’t know how long it will take you to get to your gate for your specific flight, I’d rather have you there early. Starting off your flight relaxed is a much better state of mind than stressed!

What should you know about packing?

Effective packing is key to a hassle-free trip. Start with a checklist to ensure no essentials are forgotten. Rolling clothes can save space and keep your items organized.

Always include a change of clothes in your carry-on in case your checked baggage is delayed. Try not to overpack (I’m good at not following my own advice—I’m the queen of overpacking!). It’s painful carrying a heavy backpack through miles of airport terminals; I know from experience!

What about baggage policies?

Different airlines have varying baggage rules. Familiarize yourself with your airline’s policy to avoid unexpected fees. Weigh your luggage before leaving home to ensure it meets the requirements. Most airlines have a 50-pound limit for checked bags. If you go over, you’ll have to pay more or readjust the way you pack.

Be familiar with size restrictions on carry-ons and know which items (and sizes) you can bring, to prevent delays during security checks.

What essential items should you bring?

Besides your clothes, some of the most essential travel items are best kept in your carry-on bag. Essential items are travel documents, medications, snacks, and entertainment. Keep these easily accessible. If you’re prepared, especially with snacks and entertainment, this can significantly enhance your comfort and convenience, especially during layovers or delays!

What are healthy practices while flying?

Air travel can be taxing, but taking care of your health and comfort can help. Stay hydrated (bring your own refillable water bottle!), move around as you can, and consider bringing along items like a neck pillow, eye mask, and noise-canceling headphones to improve your in-flight experience. Adjusting your sleep schedule a few days before flight can also help, if jet lag is in your future.

Anything else?

Staying informed about your flight status and any potential changes is vital. Many airlines offer mobile apps with real-time updates, and the arrival and departure board as the airports will also update in real time. Utilizing these tools can help you remain updated and avoid unpleasant surprises.

By incorporating these pre-flight preparation tips into your travel routine, you’ll definitely feel more prepared for your next flight. Remember, a bit of preparation goes a long way in enhancing your travel experience. Hopefully with these reminders, you can ensure a more streamlined and enjoyable journey, the next time you fly!
