I have some clients traveling to Amsterdam soon, so I thought I’d give you some ideas of what you could do in this beautiful city. From canals to cheese, there’s so much to do & see! Here’s a rundown of my top 5 things to do in Amsterdam.
First Amsterdam tip:
Take a canal ride! Did you know that there are over 60 miles of canals in Amsterdam? That's a lot of water to explore! Hop on a boat and enjoy a gentle ride through some of the most detailed architecture and stunning landscapes the country has to offer. And guess what? Amsterdam has 1700 bridges, which is 1300 more than Venice! That's a whole lot of bridges! You'll even get to see some locals living on houseboats - there are about 3,000 of them.
Second Amsterdam tip:
Take a walk through the wildflowers. Amsterdam is known for its bulb flowers, especially tulips. Make sure to visit the bulb flower park in Lisse to see the tulips in all their glory. Did you know that Vincent Van Gogh had an extraordinary fascination with nature, but never painted a single tulip in his life? Also, in the 17th century, there was a tulip mania in the Netherlands, and some species of tulips were so expensive that they cost more than a house! And, a fun tulip fact: Tulips come in pretty much all colors except blue. If you see a blue tulip, it’s because of Photoshop.
Third Amsterdam tip:
Visit one of the many spectacular art or history museums. You can see paintings by Rembrandt, Van Gogh, and other world-renowned artists, or revisit history by walking into the Anne Frank House, where you can see the secret annex where Anne hid during World War II.
Fourth Amsterdam tip:
Try some Gouda cheese! This cheese is named after the Dutch city of Gouda, where farmers would bring their cheese to sell on market days. Most Dutch Gouda today is industrially produced, but a few Dutch farmers still traditionally make the cheese using unpasteurized milk. And, did you know? Most Americans (including me) mispronounce it! It's pronounced "How-da," not "Goo-da."
Last but not least, Amsterdam tip:
Take a bike ride! Amsterdam is a true cycling city, with almost 250 miles of bicycle paths leading everywhere in town. Renting a bike to explore the narrow, winding streets of Amsterdam's historic 17th-century city center is a must-do! It's also a cheaper option than public transportation. Just make sure to ask expert guides and rental shops for great advice on how to get around the city if you're an inexperienced biker.
And, as a bonus, did you know that Amsterdam's airport is very close to the city? If you ever have a layover in Amsterdam, there's time to do a little sightseeing! The airport is only about 20 minutes from Amsterdam's main travel hub, Central Station, which is close to some of the city's attractions.
So, there you have it! My top 5 things to do in Amsterdam. Let me know if you’d like to spend some time in this amazing city!
